Apparently I was not done sharing as I have now recorded a video of myself needle tatting my flower pendant, warts and all. It's not fancy and I got rid of all sound to avoid the lovely breathing noises I was making. I thought about adding music, but figured that I would be the one person to get in trouble for doing so. So if you need to watch hands to learn tatting or just want to watch for the sheer 'thrill' of it, I present: Me needle tatting.
The video is also available over at instructables as a companion to my beginners tutorial where you may comment and rate it to you hearts content.
OMG,you needle-tat really fast! this is the 1st time i watch someone needle-tat live! thanks. it was educational.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I tried shuttle tatting. I felt so slow and clumsy with it. I had not heard of needle tatting until recently. Thanks for the video. I may try it again because I think the technique is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs a manicure..
ReplyDeleteI was mesmerized by the flashing needle. Your fingers were moving so fast they were blurry!
ReplyDeleteSo, were you holding the camera in your mouth? Trying to figure out how you shot that angle.
Ha Tom! It was tricky, I set up the tripod, sat right next to it & actually put my right arm through the legs to get the over the shoulder shot.
ReplyDeleteyou sure do needletat fast! I'm wondering what thread that you are using? It seems to have quite a bit of body to it?
ReplyDeleteLinda :O)
I almost always use size 10 crochet cotton. I find that it's the sturdiest for wearable designs.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video! It really helped me figure out where I was messing up with the picot joins.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Ok, open garage band and make up your own little ditty! I can see my own fingers getting puncture wounds very often... So are there things that you can't do with needling tatting in comparison to shuttle tatting and vice versa?
ReplyDeleteI have stabbed myself a few times!
ReplyDeleteThere are things that are easier with the needle, but I think there are actually more techniques that can be done with the shuttle, of course I'm no shuttle expert.
LOVE the video! I agree with Jrahn... someone does need a manicure!
ReplyDeleteThanks very much. This is the first video I have seen on needle tatting and at least now I know I am doing it right - but not that fast yet!! Your tutorials are all very very helpful!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your designs are absolutely lovely and needle tatting is sooo cool! My aunt was a "tatter" but I don't know if she used a shuttle or a needle. Glad to see it modernized in such a beautiful way. Thanks for sharing the tutorial - as a crocheter, I'm tempted to give it a whirl!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Cindy
Oh, oh, oh, I am desperate. This is exactly what I amtrying to teach myself and progress is so slow. I NEED to watch your vid, but I live in Turkey and YouTube is blocked here (I assume your vid is on YouTube only because I cannot even see the front page here!). Please, please, please can you post it on Google vids too?
ReplyDeleteI've just uploaded the video to google as well. You can find it here:

I shuttle tat and have always wondered how needle tatting is done. Thanks for the video!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for these instructions. I made my first tatted flower yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I am trying to teach myself tatting from the web, and so far hadn't had much luck with shuttle tatting. The needle was much easier. I've included my flower - and the one that didn't quite work - in a post on my blog.
ReplyDeleteOh Mel, for the instructables postings, I love you!
